Boston Celtics trade for Josh Richardson of the Dallas Mavericks
The Boston Celtics are trading for Josh Richardson of the Dallas Mavericks, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Richardson’s will be absorbed into the rest of the Gordon Hayward TPE. He will accept his player option of $11.6 million in order to get the deal done. However, since the trade was still made during the 2020-21 calendar year, the Celtics can absorb his $10.8 million salary from last year into the TPE.
Last year, Richardson averaged 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists last season. He shot 42.7% from the field and 33.0% from three-point range.
The trade was likely made in order to capitalize on the TPEs which were about to expire. Brad Stevens has made three trades already in his short tenure as the President of Basketball Operations. Richardson will join Kris Dunn and Bruno Fernando as the newest members of the Boston Celtics.
There is also some speculation that the deal may have been completed in preparation for Evan Fournier leaving in free agency. His asking price could be getting too high for the Boston Celtics to match.
The Celtics will send Moses Brown to Dallas in the deal. They wanted to send back more salary, but the Mavericks’ current goal is to clear up as much cap space as possible. The two teams reportedly met on the middle ground of Brown heading to Dallas.
