Jayson Tatum Makes History, Scores 60 Points to Tie Larry Bird’s Franchise Record
The Celtics completed the third-largest comeback in NBA history last night, taking down the Spurs 143-140 in overtime. Jayson Tatum stole the show, scoring 60 points and tying Larry Bird’s franchise record.
Tatum added eight rebounds and five assists to go along with his 60-bomb as well. He shot 20-37 from the field, 5-7 from deep, and 15-17 from the free-throw line. Tatum was one of two players to play the entirety of the fourth quarter and overtime, with rookie Aaron Nesmith being the other.
With this performance, Tatum etched himself into the history books. He tied Larry Bird’s franchise record for most points scored in a single game. He also became the first player in Celtics history to have multiple 50-point games in a single season. It was truly an incredible night for the young superstar.
The comeback win helped the C’s fully pull ahead of the Heat for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. They are now tied with the Hawks in terms of record for fifth but do not have control of the tiebreaker. Their next game will be tomorrow night at TD Garden when they take on the Portland Trailblazers at 7:30 p.m. (EST) on NBC Sports Boston.
