The Boston Celtics have traded Kris Dunn, Carsen Edwards, and a 2026 second-round pick to the Memphis Grizzlies for forward Juancho Hernangomez. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the deal cannot be formally completed until September 15, 2021.

Hernangomez has spent the past season and a half in Minnesota after beginning his career in Denver. He averaged 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds for the Wolves last season while shooting 43.5% from the field and 32.7% from three-point range. He was traded to Memphis in the deal that saw them acquire Patrick Beverley earlier this offseason.

He mainly plays power forward and will be able to stretch the floor for the Celtics. Outside of Jayson Tatum, who also plays the three, Boston lacked any real presence at the four. Hernangomez will be able to fill that role for them.

Adding Hernangomez is a low-risk, high-reward move. He is only making around $6 million this season and his contract is non-guaranteed for the 2022-23 season. This gives the Celtics a lot of financial flexibility moving forward.

Kris Dunn never played any games for the Celtics. He was traded to Boston as a part of the Tristan Thompson trade earlier this offseason. As for Carsen Edwards, his short stint with the C’s has come to an end. In two seasons, he failed to put up any sort of consistent production. A great rookie preseason earned him a multi-year contract, but he was never able to replicate that success in the regular season.

This trade also gives the Celtics some roster flexibility this season. Trading two players away for one allows them to make more roster changes before the start of the season. Brad Stevens has gotten off to a very hot start in his career as President of Basketball Operations.
